Chickwagon! Foundation for Women Hang up Their Reins!
March 11, 2015 - For Immediate Release
Calgary, AB - It is with great sadness that we announce that, after a historical 16 year run, Chickwagon! Foundation for Women will hang up their reins.
Chickwagon! Foundation for Women was
hatched in 1999 by a dynamic
consortium of forward thinking business women, and at that first Stampede, 100
local businesswomen banded together to make history as the first and only all-female chuck wagon sponsors. What began as a way to have fun, and to “take on
the good old boys” in the traditionally male dominated sport of chuckwagon
racing, became a force to be reckoned with, soon gaining acclaim locally and
nationally. Members decked out in signature hot pink, black and bling made a
powerful statement on the tarmac, and in the parade, becoming a highly sought
after marketing vehicle.
all innovative ideas do, this one too, has come to an interesting
milestone.In recent years, the ability
to fulfill our objective of purchasing a chuckwagon in the Calgary Stampede
Rangeland Derby has become increasingly difficult. ”Back in the days” a wagon
would have set us back somewhere between $25-35,000 and hosting was done with a
modest BBQ and bringing in a few frosty beverages. Today, a minimum budget of
$100,000 is required to support a wagon and fulfill the expectation of hosting
for the full 10 days of Stampede. Even with a strong membership, securing more
and more corporate partnerships has been required to help facilitate the
purchase each year. Add the challenges
of a down turned economy – and the task becomes a daunting one.
the years – the mandate of Chickwagon! has evolved. We have become much more than a group of
women who support chuckwagon racing.We
have become a new type of ‘Calgary institution’.And, we are very proud of that, as well.As an incorporated not-for-profit, our
inability to fulfill the objective of purchasing a wagon at the Rangeland Derby
leaves us with no recourse but to dissolve the current organization. However – there is no doubt that the
Chickwagon! Foundation for Women has left an indelible footprint on this city –
in more ways than one.Recognized,
celebrated and acknowledged as a powerhouse of women’s ability to lead, build
community and stand in solidarity for what is important to Calgarians – we look
toward a future that may provide some opportunity for our members and alumni to
retain relationships, friendships and fulfill our on-going desire to support
this city under a different mandate.
been most grateful to the many people who were instrumental in our success over
the past 16 years. From, our Board volunteers, to our many corporate
supporters, donors and friends, to the hundreds of members who believed in the
cause and worked endlessly and tirelessly. We would like to especially acknowledge and give a shout-out to our
former partner, Heninger Toyota, and the many others who last year helped to
“Power” the wagon during Chickwagon’s! 15th Anniversary
celebrations, and to LeChateau for their many years of providing our signature
style.Plans are underway for one last Stampede celebration, and
the opportunity to express our gratitude to our many supporters. We’re have not yet decided exactly what that
will look like. We will look forward to unveiling our next steps soon
