Chickwagon! Foundation ScholarshipLaunched in November, 2008, as a lead-in initiative to our 10th Anniversary, the Chickwagon! Foundation is proud to be the innovators behind the FIRST scholarship to be awarded to a Masters Student in the field of Social Work at the University of Calgary! The successful recipient of this award will be a graduate student, specializing in the field of Domestic Violence. Dr. Gayla Rogers, Dean of the Faculty of Social Work passes along her gratitude and congratulations to this membership for our foresight in creating this unique award. (Please see below to read Dr. Rogers’ message.) To all of our great members, family, friends, business associates, and visitors to our website, our Scholarship launched with much success. We’ve funded the 1st and 2nd years of our commitment, continue to create opportunities to fund this initiative, and foster our relationship with our charitable partner, the YWCA of Calgary. The 1st award will be presented to a graduate student in the spring of 2010. Since inception, our Board of Directors and Scholarship committee have a new vision for the “Chickwagon! Foundation Scholarship in Social Work”. Our goal is to make our scholarship to an endowed fund. Please stay tuned for further information about funding initiatives. Should you wish to make a donation to our scholarship to help us reach our vision of endowment, there are 2 ways to proceed. |

With the creation of this scholarship, we’ve added education to our list of Foundation priorities in the Calgary community. Inquiries and questions are welcome, and please feel free to send this link to everyone you know! Kind regards, and many thanks for your support. Shelley Hesla

Message from Dr. RogersI’m frequently asked why someone would go into social work – this is usually followed with some comment about social workers not making very much. I typically respond with a variation of a list published in an article called, “What do social workers make?” and I say: • They make a child believe that he is loved and wanted, regardless of how long he lasts in the next foster home. • They make a homeless person feel at home in the world. • They make an abused woman find the courage to leave her abuser for good. • They make a child fall asleep every night without fear of his father's fists. • They make the old man whose wife has Alzheimer's cherish the good times, when she still remembered him • They make a dying cancer patient make peace with her past. • They make forgotten people feel cherished, not-so-beautiful people feel beautiful, confused people feel understood, and broken people feel whole. • They make more than most people will ever make – they make a difference. The Faculty has a vision of creating social well-being and just societies. To achieve that vision we must educate the next generation of social workers to change lives; to find solutions to society’s most challenging, messy and overlooked problems; and, to make a difference in the lives of people and communities, especially those who are vulnerable, troubled or traumatized. Social Work is a noble profession, some refer to it more as a calling that a career. But our students often have complicated lives of their own - struggling to make ends meet; looking after their kids, often by themselves; coming back to school later or taking a circuitous route to get here – most have not had it easy. There aren’t many scholarships dedicated to social work students and I have to tell you that even small amounts have a huge impact and make a considerable difference in the life of a social work student. What you are embarking upon here with the Chickwagon scholarship has the potential to be transformative for the recipient. We are so appreciative and grateful to be joining with you to make this scholarship a reality. Thank you. Gayla Rogers |
