The Chickwagon! Trust Fund

This year marks another milestone with the continuation of The Chickwagon! Trust Fund. In partnership with the YWCA of Calgary, the Trust Fund will work to break the cycle of poverty and violence. We are combining Chickwagon’s vision to “build, grow and sustain a community of dynamic women” with the YWCA’s vision “to build healthy communities by building strength in women”. The Trust Fund will create a living legacy for generations of women. Together – we can make a real difference in helping real women get back on their feet!

1. Breaking the cycle of domestic violence is not easy. That’s why the YWCA of Calgary is committed to helping women, children and men move toward recovery and wellness.

2. The YWCA of Calgary provides women and children with a place to call home when they’re in crisis or transition.

3. The YWCA of Calgary believes, that in a city as prosperous as Calgary, we have the power to prevent poverty.

4. The YWCA of Calgary believes that healthy children and healthy families are the foundations for a great city.

5. The YWCA of Calgary believes in nurturing the mind, body and spirit.

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is the single largest women’s health issue in Canada, with more reported cases than heart attack and stroke. It affects women of all races, ages, socio-economic classes and educational backgrounds — and many cases also involve children. Alberta has the highest recorded rate of domestic violence in Canada, and Calgary has the second highest recorded rate for all major Canadian cities.

The YWCA of Calgary works with women, children and men — no matter their role in domestic violence — to make positive changes to break the pattern of violence. The YWCA Sheriff King Home is a 38-bed emergency shelter where abused women, with or without children, can stay up to a maximum of 21 days. We provide shelter, food, individual & group counselling, follow-up services and referrals at no cost to clients. Our priority is safety for all members of the family.

Homelessness

On any given night in Calgary, 197 families will sleep in a shelter and that number is on the rise and does not include “concealed homeless” populations; those who sleep on a friend's couch or in a family member's basement.

For many women and children, homelessness is a direct result of leaving an abusive relationship.

The YWCA of Calgary does not believe that women should have to choose between personal safety and a place to call home. The YWCA Mary Dover House is an 86-bed transitional home that offers safe, affordable and supportive housing to women and children in times of crisis or transition. In addition to housing, we also offer on-site counselling, referrals and advocacy in an environment that promotes positive change.

Poverty

Statistics show that, after separation, women experience a 23% loss in family income, and even those with stable jobs can have a hard time making ends meet, especially if they are single mothers. Recent immigrants to Canada are another vulnerable group, often because they lack Canadian work experience or English language skills.

The YWCA of Calgary is committed to empowering women and new immigrants with the skills they need to break free from poverty. Through the Vermilion/YWCA Skills Training Centre, women can train for a career in the trades; we also offer English as a Second Language and Canadian Employment Skills programs.

Children and Families

Children exposed to family violence, poverty or other negative life situations can suffer from a variety of reactions.

Early intervention is the key. The YWCA of Calgary helps children and families build positive relationships, creating a safe and supportive environment for healing through our innovative programs.

Health and Wellness

Poverty is one of the leading barriers to achieving health and wellness.

The YWCA of Calgary believes in a holistic approach to health and wellness, empowering women to make positive lifestyle choices. The YWCA Fitness on 5th offers a variety of programs and services for YWCA clients, community members, volunteers and staff.
